How to edit PDF text online

Taking out a phrase that must not stay in the document, so it is gone from the file rather than covered with a white rectangle.
What to expect
Scanned pages and photos of documents are pictures, not text, so there is nothing on them to select. Reading words out of a picture (OCR) is not something this site does yet. You can still write over such a page with Add text to PDF, or sign it with Sign PDF.
When you type a character the document’s own font does not contain — an Arabic letter in a font that only holds Latin ones, for instance — the closest bundled font is used instead and the page tells you which one. The new words may then look slightly different from the ones beside them.
A replacement keeps the size, colour and position of the text it replaces, so the page does not shift. What it cannot do is reflow a paragraph: a much longer replacement will run on rather than rewrap.
Some files store their text in ways it cannot be changed safely, such as fonts with no character map, or text drawn as shapes. When nothing can be selected on a page that clearly has writing, that is usually the reason.
Everything happens in your browser, so a very long document depends on your device’s memory. A phone handles a contract comfortably; a 500-page manual is happier on a computer.
Frequently asked questions
Is this PDF editor really free, with no sign-up or subscription?
Yes. There is no account to create, no subscription, no limit on how many files you edit, and no watermark on the result. The editing happens in your browser, so your file never leaves your device.
Is the text really deleted, or just covered?
It is really deleted. The text is removed from the PDF itself, so it can’t be selected, copied or found by searching. Nothing is painted over it.
Does the rest of the page move?
When you delete text, nothing else moves: everything you didn’t select stays exactly where it was. When you change text, only the rest of that line moves, just enough to fit the new text.
Can I change existing text?
Yes, in English and Arabic. Select words on one line, press “Change text”, type the new text and apply. The rest of the line moves to make room, in the right direction for the language.
Will the new text use the same font?
When your PDF’s font includes every letter you type, yes: same font, size, colour and position. That works for Arabic too, as long as your PDF’s font still knows how to join Arabic letters (Word documents usually do). PDFs often contain only the letters they already use, so when something is missing we switch to the closest of our bundled free fonts — Arimo, Tinos and Cousine have the same letter widths as Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, and for Arabic there are Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Arabic, Noto Kufi Arabic, Amiri and Cairo — and we tell you which one was used.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The editor runs completely inside your browser. Your PDF never leaves your device. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the editor itself (about 2 MB).
Can I edit Arabic text in PDF files?
Yes. You can select, delete and change Arabic text. Letters are joined correctly, mixed Arabic, English and numbers keep the right order, and the rest of the line moves to the left as it should. Your PDF’s own font is kept whenever it can still join Arabic letters; otherwise the closest bundled Arabic font is used and we tell you. Searching for exactly the words you changed inside the PDF may not always find them.
Why can’t I select anything in my PDF?
Some PDFs don’t contain real text: scanned documents are images, and some programs turn text into shapes. These can’t be edited yet. The editor tells you when this is the case.
Can I undo a mistake?
Yes. “Undo” reverses your last change, and “Undo all changes” returns to your original file. Your original file on your device is never changed.
